Whenever a beloved gaming franchise gets the reboot treatment, it’s always a tentative time for the diehard fans. Sometimes the payoff is entirely worth it; you only need to look at great games like Fallout 3, XCOM: Enemy Unknown and Castlevania: Lords of Shadow to know that putting a modern spin on a classic formula can result in something exceptional. But for every Street Fighter IV, Metroid Prime and Ninja Gaiden, there are garish travesties like Golden Axe: Beast Rider, Duke Nukem Forever and Bomberman: Act Zero. And the less said about the ongoing flogging of the credibility-starved needlemouse, the better.

A hero awakens with no memory of who or where he is, to find a talking sword and meet a cute flying squirrel-rabbit thing that flaps about in his wake. There’s little particularly remarkable about the opening of this side-on action-RPG, other than the slick polish of its animation and crisp art style, and the cynical are sure to greet it with a sigh.
