Oblivion flies in Japan [News]

35,000 copies sold on launch

After Blue Dragon and Eternal Sonata, it seems another 360 RPG, Oblivion, is causing a bit of a stir in Japan.

Spike, who had secured the Japanese publishing rights to Bethesda’s RPG epic, has announced that some 35,000 copies of Oblivion were sold when it went on sale yesterday – which considering how roundly unpopular the 360 is over there, isn’t too shabby.

That Oblivion has been given the chance to wow Japanese punters is something of a miracle in itself, given that it had seemed unlikely that Bethesda’s mighty RPG would ever be localised for Japan, despite online petitions from within the country begging for a release.

As such, we’re sure that Microsoft is happy with the reception that the game is getting. While the 360 continues to struggle in Japan, its RPGs have offered the spot of hope here and there, with Oblivion joining Blue Dragon (80,000 units) and Eternal Sonata (nearly 50,000 units) in enjoying strong early sales – and considering the 360 is set to play host to such games as Infinite Undiscovery, Lost Odyssey and The Last Remnant over the next few months, the 360 should have a few more strong performances to come.
