Speaking to Kotaku, one source – who has previously worked with both companies – revealed that Microsoft and Sony are hoping to extend the life of their respective machines to maximise the profits earned from them:
“Both MS and Sony are telegraphing to each other that they're delaying, to milk the current [generation] and fill in previous craters better.”
According to other sources, both companies are aiming for a launch date of around 2014 for their next hardware, although both could bring this forward to 2013 if they feel pushed.
One possible source of such pressure could well be Nintendo. The company is hotly tipped to announce its successor to the Wii at E3 this year, with a 2012 launch date expected.
And with a series of impressive specs and concepts leaking out all the time, as well as a renewed focus on the hardcore gaming market, it could well force both MS and Sony to bring their respective plans forward.
That being said, with both the 360 and PS3 now firmly on board the motion control wagon with Kinect and Move, and the economies in the US and Europe still rather fragile at this point in time, 2014 does sound suitable far off to be plausible.
