Alex Mason is many things. He’s the star of Call of Duty: Black Ops, the series’ first foray into the Cold War and the seriously FUBAR setting of the Vietnam War. He’s a CIA special operative of the highest order, who believes that subtlety on the battlefield is fitting an M60 with an ACOG sight and having it camouflaged. Before you’ve even begun the Campaign he’s strapped to a chair in an interrogation chamber on the main menu, but Mason’s the kind of guy who’s unfazed by torture. After all, he’s voiced by Aussie talent vacuum Sam Worthington, the ultimate form of pain and humiliation for a fictional character. Mason’s also the man who gets to put a bullet through Castro’s forehead during Black Ops’ opening mission, which makes him pretty damn unique.

Are you good at multitasking? Perhaps you’re reading this while making a cup of tea, standing on your head and doing some extremely complicated maths? The reason we ask is that Apache: Air Assault requires you to multitask like a one-man band riding a unicycle. As well as piloting your helicopter – which requires keeping an eye on your altitude, handling the yaw and avoiding pesky mountains that get in your way – you’ve also got to dodge enemy fire, aim your weapons, switch missiles when necessary and look for blips on your radar. If all that sounds pretty tough, just wait until you actually play it.

If you’re an all-round gamer who likes to play across a broad range of genres, then chances are you’ll have sampled your fair share of comic book adventures. And if, like us, you were curious enough to tally up every Marvel videogame ever made, it may surprise you to learn that just over 100 titles have been released – ranging as far back as Spider-Man on the Atari 2600 in 1982, to this year’s Captain America: Super Soldier. That’s a whole bookshelf of games that would make for an impressive collection, and yet despite jewels like the excellent Marvel vs. Capcom 3, there are also space fillers like the mediocre X-Men: Destiny.

Spider-Man fans have it rough when it comes to videogames. For every Questprobe, there’s a Dr Doom’s Revenge. For every Shattered Dimensions there’s a Maximum Carnage. But sometimes, for every Amazing Spider-Man there’s… well, an Amazing Spider-Man.

We’ll admit that our knowledge of NASCAR comes primarily from movies like Days of Thunder and Stroker Ace, along with Hermie Sadler’s wrestling appearances in TNA and Jeffrey Earnhardt’s MMA debut earlier this year. Still, we’re willing to bet that’s about the extent of most people’s NASCAR IQ here in the UK. So is it worth casual racing fans taking the plunge and importing the latest videogame tie-in from the United States?
