Inevitably it had to happen, and right enough, here’s a multilayered trifle of exquisite failures in ‘sport’ form. So where do we start? How about right at the creamy top with the worst motion detection we have ever had the misfortune to encounter, wave at, and find that we’ve been taken to the wrong menu?

We don’t mind admitting that of all the early Kinect games, Sonic Free Riders was among those that we wanted to work the most. Conceptually, the device and game are a good match, with the former offering gamers the chance to mimic controlling an actual hoverboard and the latter providing a sense of tempo that few other Kinect games can match.

Seems like Microsoft's going all out to make sure that people know the Xbox 360 is now all about entertainment, rather than just gaming – this weekend sees a slew of video and music apps becoming available for all Xbox Live users, not just those who subscribe to Gold. That means free online multiplayer too, right? Er, no… actually, it doesn't. Sorry.

Boot up Gotham City Impostors today and you'll get a pleasant surprise: free downloadable content. That's because Monolith has now released the first package of DLC for the game, with a slew of bonuses for anyone still playing. And the best bit? Xbox 360 players get it exclusively for now, while PC and PS3 owners are still waiting. Ha!

Well, we say Valentine gift – it's more like a free art book and soundtrack CD for people pre-ordering Catherine from their local GAME store. Still, it's better than flowers (dead after a week), chocolates (gone after an hour) or a big bottle of wine (empty in 30 minutes, then lying in the gutter being sick the morning after), right?

If the slightly twisted storyline, adult themes and downright fiendish puzzle gameplay weren't enough to make you want Catherine more than anything, then maybe the recently-confirmed special edition will help make your mind up. Because, as we all know, games that come with free stuff are better than those that don't… even though it's not technically free. Bah.
