Trademark hints at new Square title [News]

Lord of Vermillion registered with patent office

Square Enix has registered the trademark Lord of Vermillion with the Japanese patent office, possibly meaning the Japanese developer-publisher is preparing to announce a new title in the near future.

The trademark was successfully registered on 27 September this year, although no mention has been given as to which formats it will appear or whether it will be an entirely new franchise, or an extension of an existing one (such as a new expansion for FFXI).

The only previous time the name Vermillion has cropped up in a videogame was the 1989 Mega Drive game Sword of Vermilion.

However, given the slight difference in the spelling of 'Vermilion' (note: the second 'l' is dropped in the Mega Drive game) and the fact the 16bit game was developed and published by Sega, it seems rather unlikely the two titles will be connected.
